Did he think he was avian
Able to soar as he leapt
Or was he fully aware
Of his mammalian self
And the effects of gravity
Perhaps he was counting on it
To put some finality
Between himself and the endless pain
Did they see this coming
Certainly not
As hushed whispers conveyed the news
Another one lost
Another comrade fallen
He fell, they say
A student fell yesterday
Not in war
Which rages as we speak
Where millions seek refuge
Their lives, precious in their sight
What anguish could he be experiencing
That jolted a step
Of a ledge
Forever
What we deem first world problems
Might not be so cursory, minor
Suffering is suffering
Who is to say his was the lesser
That a first world pain
is not real
Compared to a third world pain?
Did you know him?
No, but she did
And he too

It's so sad
Another one lost this way is always
one too many
We bite our lips
Don't tell others
We murmur
Foreheads furrowed
Heads bowed down
Is it the shame?
Is it to give some measure of privacy to a family in shock and despair?
Is it to protect reputations?
This is so horrible
So shocking
And thus spreads like wildfire
Regardless

Have you heard?
No?
How could you not have?
and the question always remains:
Why?
We don't know but cannot bring ourselves to ask those who might
Know
Why it had to
Come to this.
They are hurting too
Closer and thus always questioning
Could I have done something
Said something
Or worse, NOT have said something that I DID
A flurry of activity
To show concern
Amongst peers
"Text me WHENEVER
I will reply in 0.1 seconds"
Goes the text in a group
An over-promise
But its intended comfort
hits home
Don't go
Stay
There is so much to stay for
There is always help
the darkness is not eternal
Please stay
