We were so happy to be back at Resin Play, this time for their Christmas edition of the Resin Cheeseboard Workshop!
Resin Cheeseboard Workshop
Apart from a cheeseboard with a gorgeous resin ’bejewelled’ handle, you can also make a coaster or two Christmas ornaments at this workshop.
For now, there are 6 more slots for this workshop on Sat 26 Nov, as you can see from the image above!
K signed up to make Christmas ornaments, and I signed up to make a coaster. Look at the beautiful samples!
This workshop was conducted by Nicole, who was warm, welcoming and encouraging throughout! She also kindly helped us take photos of ourselves hard at work during the session – those snapshots made for a good keepsake of the workshop experience too!
Here she is, doing the demo and making it all look so effortless! Confidence and bravery are a must when it comes to resin art.
Nicole chose Christmassy colours of red and dark green, accented with white and gold.
Then it was over to us!
As always, it’s not easy choosing colours from the smorgasbord that Resin Play offers, but I decided that this would be my colour-board of inspiration.
I have always loved the seascape designs, but since they were slightly less suitable to be recreated on the cheeseboard and white acrylic opaque coaster, I went with a colour palate that was both evocative of the deep sea and the distant galaxy.
As always, I wasn’t too sure how it would turn out, but I was certainly excited to embark on this resin adventure! The mixing, pouring, melding and swirling is always so therapeutic! Sometimes the results are unexpected, but with the right spirit of experimentation and embracing the unknown, the journey is always enthralling.
So this was how I laid my colours out, before adding the rich gold accents. As coached, it is always helpful to choose two contrasting or complimentary colours, followed by a white accent and a metallic accent. From previous workshops, I learnt how important white space was (or black space – in the case of galaxy coasters, and clear space – in the case of transparent acrylic based Christmas ornaments in letting through the light) in lending balance and breath to an art piece.
I enjoyed how this workshop combined the classic techniques of pouring and blending with the heat tool. I think I might have been a little too over-confident and hasty with the heat tool, wielding it this way and that, a tad too close to the tinted resin. Especially with my coaster – but I must say I liked the riotous mess of the final result. That’s art in its most spontaneous form, I guess!
I also loved how we could add chunky crystal flakes and larger ”rocks” to accentuate the design of the cheeseboard, coaster and Christmas ornaments. This was my first time playing with ’rocks’ and ’chipped glass’, and it certainly added more texture and dimension to the pieces.
K was initially quite undecided on the colour palate to use, but after getting inspiration from one of the beautiful coasters that was on display, she decided on these dreamy colours.
I might be biased, but I thought the final result of her creation was simply gorgeous! So unique and soothing.
We had such a wonderful time bonding on this mother-daughter craft date.
So if you’re looking for a well-conducted craft workshop with high quality materials to make something that useful, search no further! Here’s the direct link to the many workshops they have in November and December.
