Out & About in Singapore is a new book written by my friend Melanie Lee! It brings readers on a fun and colourful tour around our fascinating country through the evocative hand-drawn colour-pencil illustrations of Singaporean artist William Sim.
Out & About in Singapore begins with Singapore’s origin story, then brings the reader on a stroll through all the visit-worthy spots in Singapore, including Kampong Glam, Little India, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Gardens by the Bay and the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum.
In the midst of exploring all these fascinating attractions, readers will also gain insights into the culture and history of Singapore for a deeper understanding of this country.
I think it is perfect as an introductory book to Singapore for expatriate kids who are about to make Singapore their home, or as a souvenir for kids who have holidayed here.
I liked how the simple prose delved meaningfully into Singapore’s culture and history, and especially how the book includes four two-page spreads on how to make some local crafts!
The illustrations are soothing, and make me feel like I’m flipping through a student’s beautiful sketchbook.
There is currently an exhibition in Hvala Chijmes featuring this book, where you can purchase signed copies! Details in the poster below.
This book can be purchased for $24.98 in all good Singapore bookstores. You can also purchase it online from Kinokuniya and Goguru.
