Oblong – ice cream cafe

Nestled in the pretty-hip-these-days Serangoon Garden estate, is Oblong.

A quirky name for an ice-cream deli, but there you have it! Now why would an ice-cream cafe call itself oblong? After all, there’s nothing oblong-shaped about its spherical scoops of ice-cream.

Perhaps it is the shape of its premises? Perhaps it is a nod towards the oblong cuboids red bean ice-cream sticks that the ice-box scooter uncle sells?
Well, I’ll try to ask the next time I’m there.

The decor of the premise is industrial themed, which means cement screed floors, dark walls and interesting fluorescent lighting. I think the “X” lights are pretty cool!

Like every self-respecting ice-cream place these days, they serve waffles. What’s different is that they have a variety of red velvet waffles! O.O It took a while for our waffle to be made, but when it finally came, it was yums.

We tried the Earl Grey (very good) and Blueberry swirl (the kids wanted it), as well as Rum and Raisin (not pictured since it was on a second waffle).

I thought it was sweet that they took the effort in plating the waffles stacked-up, and also adding a touch of whimsy with the complimentary heart-shaped marshmellows! (First time this old fogey has seen such marshmellows!) The girls were thrilled that they could have one heart marshmellow each.

When we were there, there was also a metal grid wall with little heart-shaped papers for customers to leave notes (dang! forgot to take a photo of that), and the notes were arranged in a huge outline of a heart.

I thought it was very sweet and friendly of the owners to leave lots of writing materials and good quality markers for folks to doodle with.

All makes for a very pleasant ice-cream experience.

Not sure if it’s just me, but we’ve noticed so many new ice-cream places lately. Going to feature two more in the coming weeks that are simply awesome too! Stay tuned.
