How is my little fish feeling today?

We received a complimentary copy of Today I Am by Mies van Hout, courtesy of the Fish Book Co.
K really enjoyed reading it and musing through the various emotions

Angry! ‘Sometimes B and I are like that you know’ she said. Oh do I know that…

The book displays cute little crayon drawn dish experiencing a gamut of emotions. It was really useful for us to talk through Jealousy, being Nervous and  Carefree.
When she was done, K asked, ‘Can we read it again, please?’ Sure! And she proceeded to say how B was sometimes shy, and how she was sad yesterday because her granny came to pick up her from kindy ‘too early’ and she couldn’t play ‘guns’ with her other classmates who were still waiting to be picked up!

Kudos to fish book co. for bringing in such a charming little picture book!

2.5 year B enjoyed it too – ‘Why this fish sad? Why very angry?’ It was questions galore for her.

Originally written in Dutch, it has won awards and was most recently a nominee for the 2013 German Children’s Literature Award.
It’s a book that children from as young as 18 months can enjoy. Every mum knows how emotions can be complex for little children to understand and grapple with. The early years are when they start learning why they feel a certain way and what to do about certain feelings. I felt that reading a book like this together was an interesting way of engaging our little ones on how they might be feeling, and how we can embrace and manage each emotion.
Come to think of it, it’s even great for adults, haha. Over the years, I’ve learnt so much from my children’s books!

Now for some good news, it’s giveaway time! 5 readers stand to win a copy of this book! Leave a comment with your email clearly stated within the comment – the winners will be announced and contacted on 12 August!
