I am a durian lover, so was most happy to accede to Durian SG Prime’s invitation to do a taste review of their Prime Mountain Plantation durians!
Durian SG Prime has a physical store in Geylang, bringing in truckloads of durians fresh from Malaysia’s top durian mountains, such as the Famous Tiger Mountain, and the Indigo Hill Mountain.
Apart from being able to dine at their Geylang store, you can also make a pre-order and collect your durians by driving by, or make an order for home durian delivery. For the latter, Durian SG Prime states that all of their durians are immediately de-husked only upon order confirmation to keep the durian in its optimal freshness.
Fresh Durian Delivered to Your Doorstep
We were floored when our durians arrived! They were indeed freshly de-husked, the containers were well sealed and there was no moisture at all at the bottom of the containers.
They look great, but how did they taste?
Old Tree Mao Shan Wang
The Old Tree Mao Shan Wang was huge and pillowy soft, with pungent durian flavour oozing out of every bite. The seeds were small, which meant that most of the weight was indeed in the delicious fruit.
One packet weighs about 800g (which requires about 3.2kg of durians with husks still on) and contains about 10 plump seeds. Rich and creamy, they were such a treat.
Tiger Black Gold
I had not had Black Gold durians in a long time, so I was astounded by the intense fragrant yet bitter creaminess in every bite. Definitely a discernible difference from the Old Tree MSW, which was already very high quality.
This is certainly Durian SG Prime’s most premium offering, boasting an “intense flavour of liquor, with complementary notes of chocolate and coffee” as cited on their website. The pictures speak a thousand words, and you can see how soft and plump the durian flesh is, and how wrinkled and tiny the seeds are.
Each fruit segment was simply huge, and this is really the durian to go for if you are a true durian aficionado. My family really enjoyed every bite.
We were also very impressed at how it was so cleanly packed – the high standards of hygiene being the true mark of very professional durian sellers. So if you’re looking to indulge in a proper durian feast, you should certainly try this out!
What about the prices?
Here’s a simple infographic from their website explaining why Durian SG Prime cuts out a number of middlemen by fostering direct collaborations with the Malaysian plantations and thus brings the freshest premium durians at the best prices to Singapore.
For comparison, scroll down to the bottom of the page for the latest prices on their website. Other websites selling durian might be selling Old Tree MSW for $28 a kg, and around $30 per kg at physical durian retailers, but Durian SG Prime is offering it at about $26 per kg, both online and at their shop.
Of course, durian prices are quite fluid, so contact Durian SG Prime (via ’Live Chat’, their web form, or email them using the email address shown below) to find out the latest actual prices! My experience with their customer service was excellent – prompt responses and regular updates in the event of a delay.
Hesitate no more!
As always, the proof is in the eating. Make an order now, or hop on down to Durian Sg Prime’s physical store at Geylang Road to do the taste-test immediately yourself!
