Cycling at the Road Safety Community Park

Recently, we took a break from the kids’ revision for the mid-year exams to go cycling at the Road Safety Community Park, which is located right next to East Coast Park.

I found out recently that its first incarnation was called the “Road Safety First Park”, and it was first opened in 1961 (!!) at Kallang Park.

The current Road Safety Community Park opened in 1981, and covers a really large expansive space, amidst lots of greenery.

The kids had a good time relaxing by cycling around on their bikes. Both of them learnt to cycle when they were around 5-6 years old, so they are pretty confident cyclists who had also just got new bicycles last October.

It had just poured that day so it was really cooling, albeit more humid than usual. Still more pleasant than visiting on a scorching hot day.

The kids had been here a few times, and they never miss visiting the ‘petrol station’ to ‘pump petrol’ even though they are on bicycles! Guess they can pretend they were driving motorbikes.

It was nice for us parents to walk around the park, admire the fern and moss-covered old trees, even though the park is quite run down and certainly has seen better days.

Many people have really fond memories of going to the Road Safety Park as a school kid, but somehow I think I’ve only been there once or twice. There would be a card of all the ‘Road Safety Tests’ to pass and I recall it always being rather crowded.

For us this time, it was just really nice to be outdoors amidst the cool fresh air, and take a good break!
